The 1980 Joplin Parkwood Bears were the definition of dominance. Not very often does a team put up the numbers like this one.
The 4-A state champions were coached by Dewey Comps and had a perfect 14-0 season. They gave up a grand total of 14 points in the regular season, with 6 points against Glendale and 8 points against Central. The least amount of points they put up in a game in the regular season was 38 against Kickapoo, and the most points came against Central with 83.
The Bears went on to defeat Hazlewood in the 4-A state championship with a score of 20-13. After the Bears carried Coach Combs off the field as he waved the championship trophy towards the ecstatic Parkwood fans, he said, "This is the second baby I got."
1980 was a legendary season for Parkwood and deserves its spot in the history books.
