A 2001 graduate of Carl Junction High School, Powers enjoyed a celebrated prep athletic career and earned an opportunity to play professional baseball.
Powers was a four-year letter winner in football (quarterback), basketball (guard), and baseball (pitcher) for the Bulldogs earning All-Big 8 Conference, All-District, and Joplin Globe All-Area honors in each sport and was a two-time All-State selection in baseball.
He still owns (as of 2019) school records for single season wins (11) and career wins (20) while posting a career 2.10 ERA with 218 strikeouts.
Powers singed with Crowder College, pitched and played outfield for the Roughriders in the 2002 season. After a year in Neosho, Powers transferred to perennial NCAA Division II power Central Missouri State University (now University of Central Missouri).
In Warrensburg, Powers set single-season (129) and career (277) strikeout records and earned the decision in the Mules 11-4 victory over Tampa in the 2003 NCAA DII National Championship game for head coach Brad Hill.
Hear earned the 2005 MIAA, Central Region, and NCAA DII National Pitcher of the Year awards as a senior posting a 15-1 record with a 1.91 ERA in 113 innings of work. He was a first-team Academic All-American and earned the Vernon Kennedy Award at the Mules top male senior student-athlete.
He was drafted in the eighth round  the 241st overall selection overall by the Minnesota Twins. Powers spent four years in the Twins minor league system pitching in Elizabethton, Fort Myers, Beloit, and Double-A New Britain.
Powers has been inducted into the UCM Athletics Hall of Fame, the MIAA Hall of Fame, and earned the Diamond 9 Award from the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
